Why volunteer?
Volunteering has numerous scientifically validated benefits including:
According to research published in Health Psychology, people who volunteer may live longer than those who don't. A review of the Longitudinal Study on Aging, which included data from over 7,000 Americans 70 and older, found that frequent volunteers tend to live longer than those who don't. Meta-analysis studies report that volunteers may have up to a 40% lower chance of dying within four years.
Volunteering is a requirement for scouting and all of the adults in out troop are volunteering their time to support troop functioning and providing leadership, teaching merit badges, and approving rank advancement.
In addition to living longer volunteering provides the following benefits: gives a sense of purpose and accomplishment, help build meaningful relationships, help you feel more fulfilled about your life and future goals, improve your mental health, decrease stress and strengthen your immune system, help community connection, improve confidence, reduce loneliness, and improve job skills.
Though all adults who volunteer must complete a background check we encourage all adults who have scouts in our troop to volunteer for a leadership position and participate in the growth and development of the youth of the South Bay.
